Dealer Summary
The Porsche 944 Turbo (951) remains one of the most celebrated transaxle Porsches, combining precision handling, turbocharged power, and everyday usability in a package that helped define the 1980s sports car market. Introduced in 1985 as the high-performance version of the 944, the Turbo was Porsche’s answer to those demanding more power, sharper dynamics, and race-inspired engineering in the 944 lineup.
Porsche’s transaxle era began in the 1970s with the Porsche 924, a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car originally developed in partnership with Volkswagen and Audi. While the 924 was an accessible entry-level Porsche, it lacked the prestige and performance expected from the brand.
In 1982, Porsche introduced the 944, which replaced the 924’s Audi-based engine with a 2.5-liter inline-four derived from the Porsche 928’s V8. With a wider body, improved suspension, and more power, the 944 quickly became a best-seller, outselling the 911 at various points.
Recognizing the demand for an even faster version, Porsche developed the 944 Turbo (which debuted in 1985. This model brought race-proven turbocharging technology, elevating the 944’s performance to near-911 levels while maintaining superior balance and usability.
The 944 Turbo was not just a boosted version of the standard 944—it was substantially re-engineered to handle the additional power. The 2.5ltr inline-four with single turbocharger, forged pistons and sophisticated Bosch Motronic engine management system produced 220bhp and more than 330Nm of torque allowing it to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.7 seconds -
To handle the increase in power, Porsche significantly upgraded the 944 Turbo’s chassis to include stronger suspension components from the 928 S, bigger Brembo braking system adapted from the 911 Turbo, an option Limited Slip Differential and Transaxle weight distribution (50:50) resulting in superior handling compared to the heavier 911 models.
The result for Porsche was a commercial success, helping maintain strong sales in a decade when the 911 was struggling due to high costs and dated engineering. Offering near-supercar performance at a much lower price than a 911 Turbo, its daily usability, refined comfort and efficiency made it an excellent GT car as well as a sports car.
