Dealer Comments

By the late 1980s, Porsche was at a crossroads with its iconic 911. While the G-Series 911 (1974–1989) had been a commercial success, its underlying platform was aging, and competition from rival manufacturers was growing stronger. Porsche needed to modernize the 911 while retaining the spirit that made it legendary.

Thus, in 1989, the Porsche 964 generation debuted, marking the most substantial evolution of the 911 to date. It retained the unmistakable silhouette of its predecessors but introduced 85% new components, making it a technological leap forward.

The 964 designation followed Porsche’s internal coding system, as the company had done with previous models like the 930 (911 Turbo) and 959. Although originally developed alongside the Porsche 959 supercar, the 964 was positioned as an evolution of the 911 rather than a radical departure.
In designing the 964 Type, Porsche looked to bridge the gap between its air-cooled legacy and the demands of a modern sports car market. Some of its ground-breaking advancements included:

• 3.6L Flat-Six Engine (M64) – More powerful and efficient than previous 911 engines, producing 252 horsepower.

• Coil Spring Suspension – Replacing the torsion bar system that had been used since the original 911, providing better handling and ride quality.

• Power Steering & ABS Brakes – Standard features that made the car more approachable without diluting its performance.

• Retractable Rear Spoiler – A first for the 911, improving aerodynamics at high speeds while preserving the classic shape.

• All-Wheel Drive Option (Carrera 4) – The first non-Turbo 911 to feature AWD, inspired by the Porsche 959’s advanced drivetrain.

• Improved Aerodynamics – A sleeker body with integrated bumpers and better airflow management.

One of the most significant innovations of the 964 generation was the introduction of Porsche’s Tiptronic transmission—an advanced four-speed automatic with a manual shifting mode.

While automatic transmissions were nothing new in the automotive world, Porsche had long resisted fully embracing them. Enthusiasts and engineers alike believed that a traditional manual gearbox was essential to the 911 driving experience. However, as Porsche sought to expand its customer base, offering an automatic transmission became a necessity.

The 1990 Porsche (964) Carrera 2 was the first model to feature Tiptronic, and it quickly became a selling point for those who wanted the thrill of a 911 without the demands of a traditional manual transmission.

We are pleased to bring to market this stunning example the 90’s Porsche 964 911 Tiptronic Coupe. Delivered new by Porsche AFN in Chelsea, it is finished in Baltic Blue Metallic with Marine Blue & Linen Leather Interior.

Complete with its original owners manuals and book work, it details its stamped service history over its two ownership journey. With Porsche’s Certificate of Authenticity to accompany the car, two keys and the Porche Factory Immobiliser – you could not ask for a more complete 911.

Fresh from an annual service and ready to drive and enjoy, those weekends ahead never looked so good.

With 964 models being the smallest production in modern day terms, and being the basis for the stunning 911 Reimagined by Singer – the collector status of these cars continues to climb.

Together, the 964 and Tiptronic laid the foundation for the modern Porsche 911, ensuring that it would remain an icon in the sports car world for decades to come.

Don’t miss your chance to be the next owner.
