Porsche has always been the master of GT cars, and for many purists the letters G and T signify this perfect balance between road-going legitimacy and track-readiness you would find in a registered car.
Since the middle 2000’s, Porsche have always been reluctant to apply the "GT" badge to anything other than a 911. Partly due to credibility and partly to preserving the 911 brand as the pinnacle of sportscar performance.
However, if you were an automotive alchemist creating the ultimate driver’s car, there is a pretty good chance you would end up with a car a lot like the 2020 Porsche Cayman GTS.
The Cayman models are one of the most celebrated mid-engined sports cars, offering a perfect balance of performance, handling and everyday usability. Introduced in 2005, the Cayman was developed as a hardtop stablemate to the Boxster, delivering a more ridged chassis and driver-focussed experience.
With 3 generations spanning 20 years, with various evolutions in design, efficient power-plants (including turbo-charging) and usability, the return of the legendary flat-six reaffirmed the Cayman’s status as a true sports car.
Out of the box, the GTS is a pure GT. Boasting a normally aspirated version of the Flat-Six from the 911 with an increase to 4.0lt, it is a sublime car to drive fast and the perfect sportscar for those that like to push the limits.
Producing 400hp and 420Nm of torque, the combination of lightweight chassis, six-speed manual transmission and optimised LSA suspension, the drive is tight and precise.
The road-going Grand Tourer makes no bones about its positioning as Porsche’s most driver-focused Cayman – and whilst it improves on many of the liveable factors, it gives up nothing in the way of sportscar satisfaction.
